I have had so many boys in the studio lately, so it was refreshing to have a little girl. I had so much fun using all the girly headbands, hats and blankets. She was a the perfect model as well, only stopping to nurse one time. And unfortunate for her mom, she also only really peed and pooped once, and that happened to be while she was holding her! I caught some pee as well, pretty typical when photographing naked babies!

Odin is truly a little miracle baby. His mom contacted me a couple months ago to sign up for my photography class. Then she contacted me soon after to let me know that her water broke at only 29 weeks and she couldn't come! I was devastated for her. I don't know a lot about premature birth, but I knew that a delivery at 29 weeks was not ideal. So I followed the story as it unfolded on facebook. She was in the hospital on bedrest but her and baby were well. 3 weeks later (yes, 3 weeks after her water completely broke) Odin John was born, breathing well and doing great! 4 weeks later at only 36 weeks gestation, he was sleeping peacefully in my studio. Hard to believe this adorable little bundle was not even scheduled to arrive for another month yet! Mom, dad and big brother Isaac are pretty excited to have him around.

When I heard the forecast for our first big snow and then looked and saw I had an outdoor family session booked, I was so excited. You just can't plan a session like this, but I'm so glad mother nature allowed me to be a part of it. Didn't hurt that I had a great family to photograph as well!

Rochester MN Family Photographer: Miss Braylin

I am a little behind on this since Miss Braylin is already 10 month old, but I wanted to be sure to share her 9 month photos for you all. You may remember her from HERE

Braylin was diagnosed with a life threatening illness in May. Since then here family has learned to make the most of every minute with her and also learn the daunting task of caring for her everyday needs. She is doing well under their care along with the help of nurses and her Dr. in Madison.

I was super excited to spend another session with her. This time we spent time laughing and even playing in the leaves.

When Matt her dad told me of his dreams of playing in the leaves with his little girl, I was so excited to capture this time for them. Because of her disease (SMA Type1) she doesn't have a lot of opportunity to go out.

Our session wasn't a typical session, as there were many medical breaks to help ensure Braylin could continue breathing clearly.

But all the extra time was worth it to see her smile and interact with her mom and dad.

I can't tell you how excited I get when I know I have a newborn coming in. I wake up extra early and start getting the space ready. I warm up my whole house, set up the noise machine and pick out just the right combination of hats, blankets and buckets for the session. Then I just wait, wait to snuggle that warm newborn goodness. I have a hard time actually putting them down to take photos of them!

Mr. James came in this past week to share his snuggles with me.

I love the interaction that families bring to a photo shoot. There is so much nervous energy making sure everyone looks their best, snotty noses are wiped and bribes are secured. I also love when that nervous energy turns around into just plain fun and great family interactions. Here are some recent families I've gotten to work with this fall.

I have really enjoyed all the families I've been spending time with this fall. The apples are bountiful, the leaves are turning and the Holidays are coming up fast! I still have a few fall sessions remaining, hurry though before we are forced indoors.

This is so representative of most of my life. My kids run crazy while I take just a moment to try and connect with my husband. We take our moments when we can!

TWINS! I had two sets of twins in one day last week. Gosh they are even cuter in twos.

What a great gift to give to your family! Who wants another ugly sweater when you can give the gift of a photo instead. The A family was a joy to be around. A blast from the past for me as well since I knew one of their son's when he was in high school. And now he has a family all his own!

The M family is new to town. I love talking with my families about where they are from and hearing all about them!

And lastly the H family. What a fun family they have. The most cooperative kids, wow, they did just awesome for our session.

It's your time, time to do better

We all start somewhere.
I started with bad hair and even worse glasses.

Some start with their phone, others with a point and shoot and some with a fancy dancy expensive camera.
I started with an old square camera that was taped together to hold the film in.

You have a chance to change this. You finally got that dslr or upgraded point and shoot you have been wanting, so why do the pictures still look the same?

Are you interested in coming together with other moms (and dad's too!) to learn how to get more out of your camera?

I've been asked by many of my clients to help "fill in the gap". You see me for your milestones with your children, but what about the everyday things? First steps, first day of school, first bike ride? While I'd love to be there for all your children's firsts, I have my own crazy busy kids to deal with!

So I'd love to help you capture your children and their "firsts" but capture them even better!

For who? Moms(or dads!) with cameras
DSLR's and shooting in manual mode will be discussed but you will still benefit if you only have a point and shoot.
When? October 8th, 4:30-7pm
Where? My home (directions will be emailed)

Agenda:
4:30 Gather at my home, grab a glass of wine and some appetizers
5:00 Discussion on lighting, composition, shooting in manual vs auto
6:00 Hands on shooting with a model or two
6:45 Wrap-up, Q&A

Preparation? Before attending, please find your camera manual and read it. If you no longer have one, find it online. Just google your make and model and do a search. You should know how to change your settings on your camera, specifically changing your ISO, Aperature and Shutter Speed. Bring your manual with you as well, I shoot with Canon and may not know all the specifics on your camera.

Take home? You will take a better photo after we are finished. I promise. You may not learn everything there is to know in 2 hours (heck, I'm still learning after 7 years!) but you will learn a few new tricks.

She is beautiful, strong and smart! She know what she wants and is willing to make that happen, whether that is in school or with her photos.

She was willing to do things outside her comfort zone too and didn't think I was crazy for hanging yellow balls in trees in the woods.

She braved mosquitoes and suspicious weeds and even a crazy old tree to have a fun session with me. I love these though and couldn't wait to share them with her!

Wow, is school really starting so soon? I've had such an amazing summer with such cute kids and sweet families. I am already booking my fall sessions up fast, so hurry if you need to squeeze some photos in before the holidays. September and October are beautiful months with some amazing light. Here is a little look back on some fun sessions recently.

I've had the pleasure of photographing this family for a couple years now. I so enjoy watching them grow! That is one of the best compliments for me when a family is willing to come back year after year. Thanks a bunch H family.

This is another family whom I've taken photos of 4 or 5 times? I've already lost count! They are so sweet and little Alex (who isn't so little anymore!) just adores his role as big brother!

Miss Maeve finished out her first year with me recently. I love working with my first year package families. It is so cool to catch up every few months and capture each milestone of the first year. When her mom told me about the red and white polka dot theme I was so excited to do this set up for her cake smash!

Savannah was also back for her 3 year photos. I've been photographing her since she was only 6 months old! I am seriously so lucky to watch all these amazing babies turn into toddlers and then into the coolest kids!

And lastly, Miss Audrey. She made me work for it. 18mo is such a wild age, always on the move! Those eyes were worth the chase though!

When I was contacted by Katy, Mr. Lucas' mom, I was so flattered to be chosen for his newborn photos. She already knew he would be amazing and wanted someone else who shared her thinking.

She mentioned that they already knew he would be missing his left hand, but that they wanted someone who could see past the hand and see their beautiful baby instead.

Well, that wasn't exactly a tough thing to do. In all honesty, I noticed his amazing features first.

He had such amazing skin, the sweetest little lips and and the most beautiful soft blond hair.

There is a lot to love about Mr. Lucas. He has a big future ahead of him, I can't wait to see him grow this next year! Thanks for choosing me to be a part of the journey.

I've been busy hanging out with so many great families and I had to share a few from the past weeks. I really love my job, seriously the best!

This sweet couple called me because Jason would be home from basic training for only a few short weeks and they wanted to capture this time together.

I can't imagine being away that long from my spouse and has a newlywed it would have been even harder! Phia handles it all with such understanding and grace.

Who wouldn't want to just eat up these adorable cheeks!

Sometimes the cuteness comes in twos! Love that I got to use my new lace rompers!

I wish I could sew like the mom of these girls. She made their matching outfits!

Ok, a crazy little fact about me. I have a total phobia around balloons. Freaked, heart racing, and sweating type of insane phobia. So weird. The one thing though that has made it better is finally combining them with photography, something I love. I'm glad I have because the results are so fun!

I can't believe Mr. Alex will be going to kindergarten already. He was just a little thing when I first starting taking pictures for their family.

This was my first visit with these two. Miss Nora and Miss Abby were just at that fun cute age and their is just something special about a basketful of babies!

And just last night I reunited with Blake and Gavin. Darn they are cute!

My good friend Nikki and her husband Jason came to visit from Moorhead a couple of weeks ago. It had been forever since I had the opportunity to photograph their family, so I was super excited.

Nikki did a great job picking out their outfits. Not easy for a family of 5!

The kids get along great and the littlest, Nora is so cute how she tries to imitate her big brothers!

Later that night, Nora wanted to play dress up in the studio... she made the perfect model!

Rochester, MN family photographer: Breastfeeding mama

I was asked to do a very special session a couple of weeks ago. Kirsten had seen a photo of me and my daughter that my husband took on Facebook and asked if I could do some for her as well.

Then when Miss Eliza got a bit fussy at our session the other day, her mom thought this would be the best way to soothe her. Worked like a charm and I was able to capture this special time for them as well!

And here is the photo that my husband took of Annika and myself.

My baby will be 1 this week, so having photos of her and I sharing these moments are so special to me.

Rochester, MN family photographer: The Hiley Family

I've already posted some samples from my special father's day session with the Hiley family, but I wanted to spend a little more time explaining why this is a session that I will never forget.

I was contacted late one night by a friend of the family asking if I could fit them in for a session. Then I got this link:

See, I have the best job ever. I am allowed into people's lives for a brief moment in their journey. Shannon and Matt don't know what is ahead of them. Braylin was diagnosed in May with SMA Type 1. I'm not a doctor and don't fully understand it all, this link describes it better. www.fsma.org
Basically, Braylin's muscles are continuing to get weaker and weaker.

No parent should ever have to face this. Shannon and Matt are living hour by hour being held up by Braylin's gorgeous eyes and infectious smile.

It isn't easy though. They shed a lot of tears but they are hopeful. Hopeful that each day they spend with Braylin will be even better than the last. They are doing what they can to enjoy these moments.

Miss Elizabeth just totally cracks me up. That girl never stops talking (a little like her mom and dad!)

She is such a good big sister, sometimes a little too good. We have to remind her frequently that Miss Juliette is a real baby. The little squeals from Miss Juliette also helped to remind her! ;)

To all my dad's out there. We know it is awkward at first. Holding that precious thing in your hands, worried you may drop her but knowing you never would.

You are your kids best friend and playmate

You are their strength and their comfort

Even when you haven't even met them yet.

Mr. Noah kept us all waiting and wondering. His parents didn't know if he was a boy or a girl and they also didn't know when he would arrive. The due date came and went and still no Noah. Finally his birth day arrived, and his parents couldn't have been more relieved to finally meet him!

And could you blame them? Look how sweet he is!

He was just as sweet for me as I molded and shaped him.

Can I just say how excited I was to do both of these sessions? An apple orchard in full bloom and two amazing gorgeous families! Love it!

First the D family. They just added a little Mr. Samuel and a little girl, Miss Layla to their family in January to make an amazing family of 6! The little boys were so polite and Miss Layla was well loved by her brothers for sure.

Going to Pam and Andy's wedding was like hanging out with old friends. Ok, Pam and I really only met once before at her brother's wedding but still, I felt like I knew them better than that!

Pam made a stunning bride and Andy was quite the dapper groom.

It was raining all day, but that is supposed to be good luck right? Well, I was the lucky one for sure to have a bride and groom willing to go the extra mile and stand in the rain for some amazing photo opportunities!

They planned everything so well. The best were the fresh hot cinnemon rolls they served each guest instead of cake.

The evening ended with one of the best wedding dances I've ever attended!

Yay for finally being outside, boo for the outside still being cold. Kara and Ryan were great sports along with Mr. Owen. He was such a trooper to brave the chill in order to get some fantastic family photos.

Kara emailed me before the session and asked if it would be ok if they just wore black. Lucky for me she can take a little hint that black wouldn't be nearly as fun as a little color. She did a great job changing it all up last minute and the purple worked wonderfully for this session.

Mr. Owen was such a doll, and you could really feel the love for this kid.

There was plenty of love to go around!

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Rivera Maya in Mexico. When we were thinking of names for our first, I thought Maya would be perfect! Well, unfortunately he didn't agree and we had a boy. I still love the name though, so when Miss Maya came by the studio at 14 days old, I was happy to meet her!

Maya's internal clock works much like the clocks in Mexico. Time isn't really of any real importance, but more of a suggestion. Maya runs the same way. She was 10 days late and even then she was just content finding her own way into the world.

Apparently 10 is a magic number for Miss Maya, because this little cutie wasn't so little at almost 10lbs at birth!

She was such a sweetheart though. She let me mold and shape her any which way. Such a dream to work with. In the end I ended up snagging a few awake shots as well.

Here mom and dad even let me take her outside on our one beautiful day this spring!

I am amazed by the women I meet in this job. Women who are anticipating such joy but have no idea that joy can come from holding your sick child's head through a burning fever.

Women who have endured such heartache but yet find such strength and joy in the smiles of their children each day.

Women who love and love some more even through sleepless nights.

Women who have sat in the hospital by the bedside of their children, not understanding how they got there.

Women who laugh and laugh some more just because.

Women who soothe and comfort.

I am lucky indeed to be surrounded by so many wonderful moms. I suppose I am most lucky though to have my mom.

She held my head through burning fevers, laughed with me, held my hand as I brought my first born into the world, soothed and comforted me when I was down and most importantly loves my children almost as if they were her own.

Thanks for helping me to be a better mom!

After all, you probably taught me most everything I know!

In Minnesota we work hard for spring. We bundle up, we freeze, we endure something called a "snotsicle". So when the weather finally warms up a tad, we run outside in our shorts and sandles and celebrate! That's how I felt for my first outdoor session of the year. I had the perfect subject.

Growing up, my mom always asked someone else to hold the camera and claimed that she chopped everyone's heads off. Well, sometimes she did, other times this is what we got...

It's hard to tell what I even looked like! To my mom's defense, I have plenty of decent photos as well. But a lot that are out of balance, over/under exposed and just plain out of focus.

You have a chance to change this. You finally got that dslr you have been wanting, so why do the pictures still look the same as your old point and shoot?

Are you interested in coming together with other moms to learn how to get more out of your camera?

I've been asked by many of my clients to help "fill in the gap". You see me for your newborn, 4, 7 and 12 month photos, but what about the everyday things? First steps, riding a bike, a trip to the park. I know you want to take better photos, and I want to help you do that.

For who? Moms with cameras
DSLR's will be discussed but you will still benefit if you only have a point and shoot.
When? June 10th 5:30-7:30pm

Preparation? Before attending, please find your camera manual and read it. If you no longer have one, find it online. Just google your make and model and do a search. Also bring it along. I shoot with Canon and may not know all the specifics on your camera.

Take home? You will take a better photo after we are finished. I promise. You may not learn everything there is to know in 2 hours (heck, I'm still learning after 7 years!) but you will learn a few new tricks.

This is probably one of the toughest ages to photograph. They are at such a wonderful age for exploring, learning and moving! But they are also exploring, learning and moving!

Miss Kaia wasn't so sure about getting her picture taken.

Wouldn't you know though, we were able to turn a corner once my own kids were brought down into the studio. Miss Kaia loved baby Annika and was much more comfy hanging out after that!

Ok, so playing a little catch-up this week. My baby, err. IMac, was at the doctor this past week, so I am little behind on editing. I did get these gems finished up on my laptop though and had to share a little week in review with you.

When I saw the arms on this new dad, I knew I had to photograph them. If you look closely, you'll also see Miss Hannahs name. She was already 3 weeks old, older than most newborns that I photograph. She cooperated though for some sleepy photos and then was calm as can be for some sweet awake photos

Miss Kaia and Mr. Sam were back. Her for some 18month portraits and him for his 6 month.

It must be easter time, because we are breaking out the eggs! I'm not sure Mr. Sam was so sure about the bunny thing!

Mr. Charlie is 6 months as well. He knows how to sport a diaper cover!

I enjoyed 3 newborns this past week. Do I have the best job or what. Mr. Brooks was such a rock star. I couldn't believe how well he slept for me and such a gentleman as well. He didn't pee or poop on anything! How is that possible?

He was also super smiley. love baby smiles! I always wonder what they dream about though?

Mr. Cameron rounded out my week. What a perfect end!

Sweet and strong Mr. Easton. This boy was such a gem to have in the studio. He let me poke and prod him along with the pleasure of lulling him to sleep.

I was also super excited to try out my new blankets and new hat with him. It's always a treat for me to have new things!

Mom and Dad were pretty excited to show off their little boy.

Not sure dad knew what to think when he pooped on him arm though. Then dad was looking to me for my reaction when Mr. Easton pooped and then peed halfway across the studio! Such is life when you have newborn without a diaper on.

These two are such tiny little miracles. After arriving more than 8 weeks early, they spent their first 2 months in the NICU. A Christmas miracle happen though, after enduring a life saving surgery, Mr. Sam made it home just in time for Christmas.

Needless to say, their newborn photos were delayed a bit. So at little over 3 months, they weren't technically newborns anymore, but they did deserve to have the cute snugly photos that other newborns get to experience.

Rochester, MN Bar Mitzvah Photographer: Mr. Maor

When I was asked to photograph a Bar Mitzvah a few months ago, I anxiously accepted. A right of passage for a young Jewish boy and the emotion that comes with this for his family. Maor made the passage from boy to man to ring in the new year.

Watching him practice made me nervous for him, but he took everything in stride.
As soon as the ceremony began though, they made sure he knew he was supported with both parents by his side.

One thing they do is ask him to carry the ancient Torah scrolls. A lot of responsibility for a boy who weighs barely more than it does!

For a 2.5 hour ceremony, the younger brothers did exceptionally well!
Soon it was Maor's turn to read from the Torah. Well, actually chant. And in front of friends, family, teachers, the Rabbi and his father. His voice didn't shake once.

And according to tradition, he was showered with sweets upon finishing his accomplishment!

After a quick congratulations from the Rabbi, it was time to start the party!

I have to include these last few though, because I had such a chuckle when I saw them.

Rochester, MN Newborn Twin Photographer: Miss Malia and Miss Madeline

After months of waiting and wondering, Miss Malia and Miss Madeline made their appearance. They had a bit of a rough start in the NICU and then the flu season hit our house so I wasn't able to see them until just yesterday.

They were worth the wait.

They were so good for me and slept like angels.

The best was seeing their little bodies relax as they lay next to each other. You can tell they already know each other better than any other person will know them.

And a Merry Christmas to their families. They are truly the best gift!

What have you invested in your family this year? Does this sounds like you?

Spend time researching a photographer. Choose one (Bliss Photography is a great choice!)
Book a time for your session. Maybe you changed your work schedule to make it work, maybe you had to change other plans?
Start thinking about what you will wear. Shop online and at numerous stores. Find a few options in case you change your mind at the last minute.
Consider getting your hair/nails etc done.
Get up extra early to make sure everyone is showered, dressed and hopefully happy or at least napped.
Show up early (because shockingly I rarely have a late client!)
Smile, have fun, realize that your husband can have fun while getting his photo taken.
Spend time after session at McDonalds, because you'll do anything to thank your kids for how awesome they were at the photo session.
Wait patiently for that first peek at your photos.
Forward the link on to family, friends and even post it on Facebook for all your high school friends to see.
Decide that you have to have the DVD of the session because there is no way you can decide on just a few photos.

Then what?

Do prints get ordered?

Maybe a 4x6 for Grandma and Grandpa? What about you? Your home deserves more. Your home is your sanctuary and just as you create that space, why not fill it with the ones you love.

Think and 8x10 is large? Decide what that will look like hanging in your home.

Then just imagine what a 30x40 print may look like.

Can't choose just one photo? Think about multiple photos.

It's time to start thinking about your photos as art. You have already made an investment to save those memories, now make the next step and enjoy those moments each day in your home.

Sweet Miss Madeline. I'll have to thank her, because since she didn't feel like sleeping much I got lots of extra snuggles in. I got to feed her, rock her and attempt to lull her to sleep.
Wouldn't you know, it was daddy who finally did the impossible!

After 2.5 hours, it was worth the wait. She was such a sweety.

And the perfect model for my new Santa hat!
